The employment precariousness scale and the well-being of workers. State-of-the-art of research among different worker populations

Speaker: Christophe Vanroelen

Institution: Vrije Universiteit Brussel

A review of the state of research on precarious employment and workers’ well-being based on the use of the Employment Precariousness Scale (EPRES), a multidimensional instrument that captures the accumulation of adverse working conditions associated with situations of low bargaining power.

This empirical approach makes it possible to identify structural inequalities across different segments of the labour market and among various groups of workers, as well as their relationship with other dimensions of job quality and health. The scale has been applied in several countries, including Spain, Chile, Belgium, Finland, and Sweden.

The presentation will focus particularly on recent findings based on data from Belgium, as well as on indicators derived from the European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS). It will also explore the potential for applying this analytical framework to other groups, such as self-employed workers, platform workers, and workers in informal employment.
