Institutional rules and the practices and trajectories of social science research personnel

Studies on the professional careers of social science researchers tend to focus on the development of their training, experience, expertise, working conditions or the academic milestones they achieve throughout their careers. This series of particularities is usually linked to sociodemographic characteristics, values, norms or interests, or the characteristics of the institutions or disciplines to which they belong or have belonged.

From this last approach, it is also considered important to analyze the personal, social and organizational institutional factors that influence their decisions and opportunities. This is where the present research is included, which seeks to analyze how institutional rules influence professional trajectories and their research practices in the social sciences. Institutional rules are understood as all those norms that regulate aspects of the work of social science research personnel. They may be formal or informal, explicit or implicit. They usually establish conditions, incentives and/or rewards/punishments that may favor or hinder the performance of certain activities or practices.

Given its great variety, both in forms and results, it is considered relevant to address the general objective of this research: to analyze how the set of institutional rules of social research influences the practices and trajectories of research personnel. To this end, the following specific objectives are proposed:

  1. To explore the perceptions and experiences of social researchers about the set of institutional rules of social research and their influence on the research practices they develop.
  2. To investigate how the set of institutional rules of social research influences the biographical and professional trajectories of social science researchers.
