Demographic and Contextual Factors in the Development of Questionable Practices in Academic Research

Speaker: Daniel de Gracia

Institution: Centre d’Estudis Sociològics sobre la Vida Quotidiana i el Treball

The session examined how factors such as gender and experience influence the prevalence of questionable research practices (QRPs) in the field of sociology, drawing on data from the 2021 International Research Integrity Survey (IRIS). A detailed statistical analysis of 1,917 cases was conducted, and some of the findings are illustrated through archival interviews. With a sociology-centered approach, this study provides evidence in a still underdeveloped field that investigates which characteristics shape ethical or questionable practices in research. In addition, it highlights the importance of developing context-specific interventions aimed at fostering stronger ethical standards in academia. Finally, the session presents a set of debates and novel proposals in the field of research integrity promotion, with the aim of stimulating further discussion.
